My Marshall Ancestors | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
NOTE - my yDNA
results confirm this line is a member of haplogroup T-M70, a subgroup of T-M184. I also tested with the Big Y-700 and am in refined haplogroup T-FTC85065. A second descendant of William Marshall has also been tested which confirms our ancestry and that we are in the correct haplogroup. |

GENERATION 1 | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
SNIPES ORIGINS My early Marshall ancestors have Snipes origins. I recently tested at FamilyTreeDNA at Y-DNA111 for my Marshall surname and have 11 matches to "Snipes" relatives with 1 additional "Marshall" match (Shane Marshall) who also descends from William and Charity. At this time, the connection appears to be before 1740 as there are no Snipes autosomal matches that match my other Marshall DNA matches. It is speculated that the earliest Marshall ancestor (name unknown) either assumed the Marshall surname from a stepfather or had a different biological father that was a Snipes. The Snipes family originated in England but migrated to Barbados and then many came to North and South Carolina in the 1700's. Click here for a brief history of this family. I have started a Snipes surname page to document the early generations of this family. |

GENERATION 2 | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
William John Marshall [1] was born on March 10, 1799 in North or South Carolina and died on November 10, 1837 in Darke Co., Ohio. He is buried in Union Cemetery, Ludlow Falls, Miami County, Ohio; Row 10, #14; inscription reads "age 38y 8m" There are no records of who his parents were at this time. His birthdate and middle name "John" is from researcher Jon Joseph Reeves and based on an interview with his grandmother Kate Wisener and a Marshall Family Bible. William was of English descent according to a biography of his son Sampson published in the "History of Miami County, Ohio 1880 - p. 779" - PDF of page here and jpg. This document also lists William's children with birth and death dates. In abt. 1817 William married Charity Wright. She was born June 11, 1801 in South Carolina and according to DNA and other evidence is the daughter of Nathan Wright and Sarah Jay. We can help to establish Charity's parents by looking at a letter written on November 5, 1841 by Right Wright to sisters Mary Brooks or Charity Marshall (Page 1, Page 2, translation analysis document), images and analysis used with permission by Ronald E. Toops. In addition, I share a significant number of DNA matches with other Wright, Jay and Wells ancestors that does not appear to come from any of my other researched lines. Between 1822 and 1825, the Marshall family migrated to Miami County, Ohio from South Carolina in a wagon covering a distance of 700 miles. They first settled on the Stillwater, but ended up in Darke County. William is on the 1830 census living in Union, Ohio with 7 people in his household. There is a record of a William who purchased land on July 10, 1832 in Miami County. The cause of William's death in 1837 at age 38 is unknown. He is buried next to John Brooks (c1795-1831) who is most likely the husband of Charity's sister Mary Brooks. The following year Miami County Records show that Charity was in court regarding William's will. The 1840 Newton Township Census shows Charity and oldest son John as head of household. It accounts for all of Charity's children on it. Nothing is known about Charity from 1840-1850 but she was deceased by 1850 since her children were then under the guardianship of "Mary Brooks" as listed on the 1850 Census . Mary would be Charity's sister and later appears on two 1860 censuses (Ohio and Indiana ) living with Jane Marshall's family. Charity likely died of tuberculosis (consumption) as the letter from her brother Right Wright in 1841 mentions she had it. The family appeared to have followed the Quaker migration route from South Carolina to Ohio. Charity's parents were Quakers but no traces of William, Charity or any of their children have been found in Quaker meeting minutes to date. His son Thomas was in possession of a Quaker bible which was used to record the births of his children but it likely came from his wife's side (Furnas) who were known Quakers. See the documents section of this webpage for screenshots of the Thomas Marshall Family Bible pages. It is interesting to note that several of William's children married into families with Quaker roots such as the Furnas' and Pearsons. William is buried in the Union Joint Cemetery, Miami, Ohio, row 10 - (Cemetery information image here & row 10 image here.) Another valuable source is "Miami Valley Ohio Pioneers" by Lindsay Brian (1970), which on page 119 lists the family of William and Charity Wright along with their 10 children. I contacted Joe Bosserman, researcher in Miami County, Ohio in 1997 and obtained the contents of this entry (see attached image for letter). The 10 children of William and Charity are:

GENERATION 3 | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Thomas Marshall, [1] (1822-1870) son of William and Charity was born February 25, 1822 in South Carolina and moved with his family to Miami County, Ohio between 1822-1825. He was 15 when his father died in 1837 and was one of the 10 children his mother Charity had to support after William's death. He met his wife Rhoda Furnas in Ohio and married in 1843. Rhoda is the daughter of Martin Furnas and Marsena Patty. County deeds show him being in Miami, Ohio Newton Township in 1850 (Source: Miami Valley Genealogical Index) The book "Genealogy of the Furnas Family" by Tanzy R. Furnas (1897) lists Thomas and Rhoda's children along with information on her parent's family (see image here.) The 1860 census shows the family was listed on the Randolph, Indiana White River Township with Thomas' occupation as a farmer. At that time the census shows that his sister Jane was living in the same area with her children 1 township away. Nancy Jane, the couple's youngest child was born in 1863. It is believed that Thomas left Rhoda in 1863 or later because son William Frank in the Civil War had to return home early to help Rhoda out at the farm. Their daughter Emily died in 1865 at age 12. Click here for a large picture of Thomas from around 1861. This old picture of Thomas was taken when his son William Frank was about 16. It was framed in the same antique styled frame that his son's was (see William Frank's picture here).
In
1870, Rhoda was still in Randolph County, Indiana with her children the year
Thomas died on February 25th of
delirium tremens.
His death is noted in the
1870
Randolph County Indiana Mortality Census for White River Township (larger
image here), but
the location of his grave is still unknown. On May 19, 1870 Rhoda filed
Guardianship papers
for her children.
The 1870 census
shows her as head of the
household (age should be 46) with the addition of her brother James, his
wife Rebecca and son Lloyd. See image
here from FamilySearch file
and here
for her census record noting her age is incorrectly transcribed as 16 (she
was 46 when Thomas died.) As William was a farmer, they most likely
moved in to help with the farm. By 1873 Rhoda had moved on and was
living in Sumner County, Kansas where her son
Newton died at age 12. In 1885 Rhoda was living with son William
Frank Marshall and family. She likely stayed with them when they moved
to Eugene Oregon a few years later where she died on February 13,
1906. William Frank died in 1909.

children of Thomas and Rhoda are:

GENERATION 4 | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
William Frank Marshall, [1] son of Thomas and Rhoda was born on August 14, 1845 in Miami, Ohio. The 1860 census shows him living with his parents, age 14. William fought in the Civil War and first enlisted in June, 1861 in Winchester, Indiana serving in Col. 6 19th Indiana Infantry. Click Here for a picture of William at age 16 around this time. He was later captured during Sherman's march to the sea and spent time as a prisoner. He later escaped and returned home to help his mother on the farm. He then went back into the army on Feb 23, 1864 in Ohio as a Private in Company I, 1st Calvary Regiment and was discharged on September 13, 1865 in Hilton Head, SC. William was a gunsmith and also made violins. In 1871, one year after Thomas died and age 26 he was living by himself in Camp Point Adams in Illinois which is 8 miles east of the Missisippi. While there he wrote a year long diary that details his daily activities before he met Nancy. At the time he was known as a fine fiddle player and often performed at local events. He married Nancy Emily Crewse about 1879 and settled in Wellington, Kansas. Nancy is the daughter of James Crews and Rhoda McMulin. By 1880, he was age 33 and mother Rhoda and sister Cornelia were living with them according to the 1880 census . Unfortunately the 1890 federal census was destroyed by fire so we have no record of his location at that time. About 1900, the family moved to Eugene, Oregon where his youngest 2 children were born. He appears on the 1900 Census living there, age 55 with 3 children Lou, John and Sherman. Son William E was born a year later. He died in 1909 in Eugene, 5 years after Ada was born. He was 64 years old when he died.
The 9 children of William and Nancy are:

GENERATION 5 | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
William Edward Marshall, [1] 8th child of William and Nancy was born on February 13, 1901 in Eugene, Oregon. He appears on the 1910 Census age 9 and living in Eugene. The 1920 Census shows him age 18 and living with his Mother and sister Ada. He attended a trade school in Portland around 1926-1927. Based on a recent DNA discovery he fathered a son there - Leo Marcus Kelly (1927-1999) that he was likely unaware of. He married his first wife Mae/May Warnick around 1928-1929 and divorced by 1930. The 1930 census shows him divorced and living with his brother John's family and his mother Nancy. On October 18, 1930 he married his second wife Irene Schwiening, daughter of Ernest Schwiening and Grace Hawk - (see wedding photo here.) They had 2 children, William E. and Janet. They lived in Eugene, Oregon. The 1940 Census shows him age 38 and living in Portland, Oregon just before they moved to Port Orchard, Washington. There he worked in the Puget Sound Navel Shipyard in nearby Bremerton as a sheet metal worker and estimator for 25 years. Their vacation to the South Pacific and New Zealand in 1971 was one of the highlights of their lives. Upon retirement, he and Irene moved to Salem, Oregon in 1974. Bill and Irene enjoyed their retirement years traveling to Mesa, Arizona every winter where they owned a home. They also enjoyed spending time with their grandchildren. He died of cancer in Salem on January 29, 1981. Visit the William Edward Marshall memorial page here. |

Marshall DNA - Ancestry.com |
My Dad currently shares DNA with 48 matches that have a listed descent from the Marshall line. This is based on some of their Ancestry.com trees, futher research I have done on their lines and triangulation done with other shared DNA matches. This includes 40 from William Marshall/Charity Wright and 8 from Thomas Marshall/Rhoda Furnas. In addition, I have over 120 DNA matches to the Wright line and 100 matches from the Jay line. |
Marshall yDNA results - FamilyTreeDNA.com |
I had my yDNA
tested at 111 markers and I am at the
T-M70
main haplogroup, a subgroup of T-M184 which is incredibly rare in England -
William John Marshall has English ancestry. All of the Marshall
descendants outlined on this page would share that group. I have also
tested with the Big Y-700 and am in refined haplogroup
T-FTC85065.
This line shares a common paternal ancestor with
Thomas
Jefferson around 6600 BC. By taking this test it allowed the
haplogroup to split from
T-BY86756
into a more refined one. In addition, I have 11 "Snipes" matches listed in my yDNA results. The exact connection to the earlier Snipes family is unknown at this time but earlier ancestors of this Marshall line shared that surname. In addition, a 2nd Marshall descendant from William and Charity has been tested (Shane Marshall) which confirms that the haplogroup and matches to the Snipes family is accurate. |
Dedication |
This
Marshall page is dedicated to Joe Bosserman (1930-2010) Joe dedicated years of his life working on the Miami Valley Genealogical Index. This massive database contains many records from Miami County, OH including my early Marshall ancestors and related families. He provided me with details in 1997 which confirmed my connection to William Marshall / Charity Wright. |
This
Marshall page is also dedicated to Dock Earl Marshall (1880-1968) Dock kept a detailed notebook of names and dates for the Marshall family. It is through his detailed notes I was able to research the Marshall line further back. |
