abt. 1711. The place of his birth is unknown. He probably spent
his early years in Western New Jersey and associated with the Quakers. He
married his first wife abt. 1732 whose name is unknown. They had 1
child (Sarah Jay, born abt. 1733) before his wife died in abt. 1736.
William then married Mary Vestal
in abt. 1738, daughter
of William Vestal and Elizabeth Mercer. William died Bet. 23 Nov 1772
and Jan. 1773 in Ninety Six District, South Carolina.

William and Mary was born abt. 1739 in Orange Co., Virginia. William
was a Revolutionary War veteran and served as private in the Pennsylvania
Regiment of Artillery, Continental Line. William died before February 28, 1797 in Newberry, South Carolina. The will of William Jay which was dated January 7, 1797, proved February 28, 1797 and on file in Newberry, SC: "State of South Carolina Know all men by these presants that we John Jay and David Jay of Newberry County in the State aforesaid Executors to the Last Will and Testament of William Jay Dec'd and by the authority thereof in consideration of the sum of two hundred dollars to us in hand paid by William Jay of Newberry County in the State aforesaid have granted sold and released unto the said William Jay all that plantation or tract of land containing one hundred and sisc acres and half more or less situated lying and being in the County of Newberry and in the State aforesaid. It being part of two tracts of land the one formerly granted to David Richardson by letters patent in Charleston baring date the sixteenth day of October in the year of our Lord on thousand seven hundred and seventy two the other tract was formerly granted to William Jay by letters patent in Charleston bearing date the fourteenth day of August in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and seventy two and the said tract of land of one hundred and sisc acres and hath such shape form and marks and being and bounding as a plat thereof to these presents exceed doth fully represent together with all and singular the rites members heredetiments and apertenances to the said premises or in anywise incident to or pertaining to have and to hold all and singulualer the premises before mentioned ____William Jay his heirs and assigns forever." 03. Sarah Elizabeth Jay, [1] daughter of William and Elizabeth was born on April 27, 1761 in Bush River, Newberry Co., SC. She married Nathan Wright, son of John Wright and Rachel Wells. Sarah died abt. 1834 in Paoli, Orange County, Indiana. See the Wright surname page for their children. I descend from their daughter Charity Wright who married William Marshall. |

This is based on some of their Ancestry.com trees, futher research I have done on their lines and triangulation done with other shared DNA matches. This includes 24 from William Jay/Mary Vestal and 97 from William Jay and Elizabeth.
