"Of roughly equal authority as the steward was the marshal. This officer had the militarily vital responsibility for the stables and horses of the household (the "marshalsea"), and was also in charge of discipline. The marshal, and other higher-ranking servants, would have assistants helping them perform their tasks. These – called valets de chambre, grooms or pages, ranking from top to bottom in that order – were most often young boys, although in the larger royal courts the valet de chambres included both young noble courtiers, and often artists, musicians and other specialists who might be of international repute. Assigning these the office of valet was a way of regularising their position within the household." (source) |
01. Gilbert Marshal, [1] known as Gilbert "the Marshal", he was the first known holder of the office. He was born abt. 1067. His wife's name is unknown but they had at least 2 sons, John and William "Giffard." Gilbert died before 1130. 02.
John "The Marshal' FitzGilbert,
[1]
son of Gilbert was born abt. 1105. He was a minor Anglo-Norman
nobleman during the reign of King Stephen and fought in the 12th century
civil war on the side of Empress Matilda. He married
Sibilla of Salisbury, daughter of Walter De Evereaux and Sybil De Chaworth.
In 1152, John had a celebrated confrontation with King Stephen, who had
besieged him at Newbury Castle. After John had broken an agreement to
surrender, Stephen threatened to kill his son, whom John had given as a
hostage. John refused, saying he could make more sons, but Stephen
apparently took pity on the young boy and did not kill him. The boy grew up
to be William Marshal, 1st Earl of Pembroke, a legendary figure in medieval
lore, and one of the most powerful men in England. Later in his life, John
briefly became entangled in the
Becket Controversy. Having unsuccessfully tried to assert a claim over
the archbishop's land in Pagham in 1164, John then appealed to the king.
Although John's claims were dubious at best, King Henry used the affair to
his advantage against
Becket, who had refused to appear in person at the appeal. The resulting
Council of Northampton in October 1164 led to further charges being aimed at
Becket, such as embezzlement during his time as chancellor, and he would
soon flee to the continent.
