Turner

My Turner ancestors

01. Edward Turner was born in 1633 in Middletown, Middlesex, CT.    He is possibly the son of Arthur Turner from England.  Edward married Mary Sanford in 1656, daughter of Richard Sanford and Margery.  The Turners have a long history in Connecticut and a number of them fought in the Revolutionary War.

02. John Turner, son of Edward and Mary was born on August 08, 1669 in Middletown, Middlesex, CT.  He married Suzanne Merrill, daughter of John Merrill and Sarah Watson on January 20, 1709 in Milford, New Haven, CT.  John died in December 1755 in Hartford, CT.

03. John Turner, son of John and Suzanne was born on August 5, 1703 in Hartford, CT.  He married Abigail Richards, daughter of Thomas Richards and Mary Parsons on August 26, 1726 in Hartford, CT.

04. Jedediah Turner, son of John and Abigail was born on April 5, 1733 in New Haven, CT.  He was soldier in the French and Indian War (1758) and a private in the Revolutionary War (between 1775 and 1783).  He married Rachel Thompson, daughter of Caleb Thompson and Rebecca Hickok on April 5, 1760 in Waterbury, CT.  He died on April 5, 1760 in Franklin, NY.  Registrations in Waterbury, CT confirm that Asa was a son of Jedediah and Rachel.

The following is a summary what is known about Asa Turner based on the research of Alma C Turner :

05. Asa Turner
, Revolutionary War soldier and Baptist minister, Asa was born on June 14, 1765 in Watertown, Connecticut, son of Jedediah Turner and Rachel Thompson. His father's ancesters were in Connecticut since at least 1633.   Asa is the great-great grandson of Edward Turner and Mary Sanford.

In 1778 when he was 13, the Revolutionary War was going on and he enlisted. He served several posts between 1778-1782.

After he served in the war he met Isabel Ketchum and probably married her prior to 1787. In 1787, the couple was in the village of Franklin, NY where son Gideon was born. The following year he was sent to Upper Canada to establish the Baptist church there. While in Canada, son Benajmin was born in 1793 and daughter Pamelia in 1805 while in Hastings County, Ontario. He was called back to the US by 1810 and was located in the area of Scipio/ Pleasant Valley NY where he was also a Baptist minister.  By 1847 he was living with daughter Louisa Jones in Stockton, Chautauqua Co., NY. He died on November 27, 1847 and was buried in Stockton, Chautauqua Co., NY.

To date, no will has been found for Asa. Records from around the time Asa was in Upper Canada have been burned so it is hard to obtain information from this timeframe. One of his granddaughters was Josephine B. Mix (nee Dexter), a 19th Woman Physician of the Medical College of New York City. Asa had a brother, William Turner who was also from Chautauqa Co.

Asa Turner has a plaque at Turner's Corner's ie Old Baptist Road and 8th Concession, at the Baptist Church, Sidney Township, Hastings Co. He had land just a few settlements (farms) away. The plaque was placed by the Gov't of Ontario commorating his work in founding many Baptist Churches in Upper Canada. Alma's gr gr gr Grandfather , Benjamin Turner, owned the land and stone house and Turner School, just kitty corner to the Plaque and Church. Benjamin built that house.

06. Pamelia Ketchum Turner, daughter of Asa and Isabel was born on September 02, 1805 in Hastings, Ontario, Canada.  She married Miles Jones, son of Miles Jones and Mehitable Adams on November 6, 1822 in Ellery, Chautauqua, NY.  She died on May 1, 1883 in Elmwood, Illinois.  I descend from their son Darius Jones who married Margaret Cowan.
