Savage

The following history on the Savage family is from various sources including
 "Medieval English Ancestors of Robert Abell"

01. Sir John Savage was of Stennesbury, Derbyshire, according to an undated deed of about 1206 in the pedigree of Savage of Clifton in Rylands' edition of The Visitation of Cheshire, 1580. p. 203. He married Avice Walkington, daughter and heiress of that family.

02. Sir John Savage, son  of John and Avice, was listed as the fourth generation in the pedigree of Savage of Clifton. He died in 1386. He married about 1376, as her second husband, Margaret Danyers, who died 6 Hen. VI (1427-1428), daughter and heir of Sir Thomas Daniers, Lord of Bradley and Clifton. She had married first, in 1369, John Ratcliffe, who died leaving no issue. She married third, in Nov. 1388, Piers Legh of Maxfield, younger son of Robert Legh of Adlington. She inherited all her mother's lands. Having survived all her husbands, as a widow she gave the moiety of Gropenhall to her son Piers in 1403. To her son John Savage she gave the liberty to bear her arms, deeded to her by her father.

03. Sir John Savage, son of John and Margaret, of Clifton, Cheshire, died 1 Aug. 1450. He married first, about July 1401, Maude Swynnerton, widow of Humphrey de Peshale and William de Ipstones. She brought him the manor of Barrow. This marriage caused a feud between the Savages and the Peshalls, involving suits over her estates as well as violence. He married second, by 1428, Elena, widow of James de Haryngton. He fought at Agincourt in 1415, and was knighted in 1416.

04a. Sir John Savage, son of John and Maude, Esquire, of Clifton, Cheshire, died 29 June 1463, aged 53. His wife was not named in the Savage pedigree by Ormerod, but was identified by him in 3:89 as Eleanor Brereton (or Elizabeth).

04b. Ellen Savage, daughter of John and Maude, was born about 1432 in Clifton, Cheshire.  She married Peter Warburton, son of Geoffrey Warburton and Ellen Bruyn abt. 1458.  I descend from their son Sir John Warburton who married Jane Stanley.

05. John Savage, son of John and Eleanor, K.G., of Clifton, Cheshire, born about 1423 (aged 40 in 1463), died 22. Nov. 1495, aged "73", and was buried at Macclesfield. He married Catherine Stanley, sister of Thomas Stanley, 1st Earl of Derby, and heiress of the manor of Camden. He was knighted in 1477 and fought at Bosworth in 1485.

06a. Margaret Savage, daughter of John and Catherine was born abt. 1450 in Clifton, Cheshire.  She married John Honford after 1468.  I descend from their daughter Katherine Honford who married John Mainwaring.

06b. Ellen Savage, daughter of John and Catherine was born abt. 1460 of Clifton, Cheshire.  She married Sir Piers Legh, son of Piers and Mabel Croft.  I descend from their daughter Margaret Legh who married Laurence Warren.
