02. Robert Dana (Dawney)
[1]
C
son of
Edward and Agnes was baptized on June 2, 1571 in Natland, Kendal,
Westmoreland, England. On April 10, 1596 he married Elizabeth
Barlowe in Manchester, England.
He was named in the Manchester Subsidy for 1622; in indentures of June 18, 1623, Aug. 12, 1631, Feb. 16, 1635/6, and Nov. 26, 1641. He also gave a bond, Aug. 18, 1632. On Oct. 6, 1609, he was chosen an officer in "Mylne Gate" Street, to see that "mastive doggs goe not abroad in the streets but be kept cheyned." Again he was chosen an officer, Oct. 1, 1612, and his name was written as "Robert Danam." He was also an officer in "Myln Gate", Oct. 7, 1619. He was appointed "Bylawman for the Milne Gate," Oct. 12, 1624, and again, "Bylaman for the Milnegate" Oct. 5, 1630. His assessment in the Subsidy of 1622 was in goods iij li with a tax of viij shillings. Although he was buried in Manchester, May 24, 1644, no will or administration of his estate is now to be found in England. It was in the time of the great Civil War there, and it is supposed that these troubles prevented the probate of his estate, as it did many others. 03. Richard Dana [1] son of Robert and Elizabeth was the first Dana to come to America, landed in New England about 1640, and was one of the early settlers in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He was the only person of the name of Dana to come to America from abroad for at least two hundred years. He is, accordingly, the progenitor of the Dana family in America, and, with a few recent exceptions, all the Danas to be found in this country are his descendants. He was born on Oct 31, 1617 in Manchester, Lancashire, England. He married Anne Bullard, daughter of Robert Bullard and Anne Martyn abt. 1648 in Cambridge, MA. Richard died on April 2, 1690 in Cambridge, Middlesex, MA. The children of Richard and Anne are:
