01. Edward Dana
[1]
(the elder) was born
abt. 1535 in Natland, Kendal, England. He married Agnes abt. 1575
in England. Edward was buried on April 23, 1611 in England.
"Beinge very old & crased in body yet of pfecte minde"
Edward Dawney, the elder, of Natland, in the parish of Kendal, husbandman,
made his will, Mar. 4, 1610/11. He desired to be buried in the east end of
the Kendal church. He bequeathed portions to his wife Agnes and to his seven
children, mentioning by name his son Rowland, who had agreed on May 14,
1606, to take the homestead and to pay to the testator and his heirs the sum
of œ100. The sons named in the will were Rowland, Edward, Robert, James and
William Dawney, who was then deceased, and his daughter, Alice Dawney. The
will was proved June 8, 1611. Source: "Dana Family In

02. Robert Dana (Dawney)
[1]
C
son of
Edward and Agnes was baptized on June 2, 1571 in Natland, Kendal,
Westmoreland, England. On April 10, 1596 he married Elizabeth
Barlowe in Manchester, England.
He was a tanner, and the family lived in "Mylne
Gate" (Mill Street) in Manchester, as did the family of Henry Sewall and
Robert Walker. Apparently his wife Elizabeth died about 1625, and he married
(2) ELLEN (???), who as the "wife of Roberte Dana of Manchester, tanner, was
buried Apr. 21, 1635. No will or administration of Robert Dana, or his
wives, has been found in any probate court in England after a most diligent
search.
He was named in the Manchester Subsidy
for 1622; in indentures of June 18, 1623, Aug. 12, 1631, Feb. 16, 1635/6,
and Nov. 26, 1641. He also gave a bond, Aug. 18, 1632.
On Oct. 6, 1609, he was chosen an
officer in "Mylne Gate" Street, to see that "mastive doggs goe not abroad in
the streets but be kept cheyned." Again he was chosen an officer, Oct. 1,
1612, and his name was written as "Robert Danam." He was also an officer in
"Myln Gate", Oct. 7, 1619. He was appointed "Bylawman for the Milne Gate,"
Oct. 12, 1624, and again, "Bylaman for the Milnegate" Oct. 5, 1630. His
assessment in the Subsidy of 1622 was in goods iij li with a tax of viij
shillings.
Although he was buried in Manchester,
May 24, 1644, no will or administration of his estate is now to be found in
England. It was in the time of the great Civil War there, and it is supposed
that these troubles prevented the probate of his estate, as it did many
others.

03. Richard Dana

son of Robert and
Elizabeth was the first Dana to come
to America, landed in New England about 1640, and was one of the early
settlers in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He was the only person of the name of
Dana to come to America from abroad for at least two hundred years. He is,
accordingly, the progenitor of the Dana family in America, and, with a few
recent exceptions, all the Danas to be found in this country are his
descendants. He was born on Oct 31, 1617
in Manchester, Lancashire, England. He married
Anne Bullard,
daughter of Robert Bullard and Anne Martyn abt. 1648 in Cambridge, MA.
