My Gates ancestors
|01. Stephen Gates, immigrant ancestor of one branch of the Gates family in America came from Hingham, England, with his wife and children in the year 1638. They sailed in the Diligent of Ipswich, John Martin, master. According to Daniel Cushing's records, which seems to be accurate, he brought two children with him (The Register, Vol. 15, p. 26-27, January 1861). In regard to the Gates family Cushing appears to have made an erroneous statement. Stephen's children Elizabeth, Stephen and Mary were all born before 1638. It is unlikely that one of these young children should have been left in England and come at a later date.
Stephen Gates and Ann Veare were married in Hingham, England 5 May 1638 (The American Genealogist, vol. 10, p. 199, April 1934). She deposed in Middlesex County, Mass., Court, 12 June 1673, aged about seventy years from which it appears that she was born in or near Norwich, co. Norfolk, England, about 1600.
Stephen made his will, 9 June 1662, and died before 29 Sept. 1662, when the inventory of his estate was taken. His widow married Richard Woodland of Watertown, Mass., who died 16 Feb. 1664/5.

|02. Stephen Gates, son of Stephen Gates and Ann was born probably in Norfolk,
England abt. 1634 and died in Stow, Mass., 9 July 1707. He married Sarah
Woodward [daughter of George Woodward and Mary Gibbson] probably about 1664. Sarah was born 3 Feb 1642/3 and died after 15 Sep 1707. Stephen came to New England with his parents in 1638. After he became of age he resided in Lancaster, Cambridge, Boston, Marlborough and Stow. He deposed in 1678, age 44 years, and in 1691, aged 57 years. His will, dated in Stow 5 Sept. 1701, was proved 15 Sept. 1707.
