My Castile ancestors |
The ancestors below are among the early Castilian monarchs from Spain |
The Kingdom of Castile; Spanish: Reino de Castilla, Latin: Regnum Castellae) was one of the medieval kingdoms of the Iberian Peninsula. It emerged as a political autonomous entity in the 9th century. It was called County of Castile and was held in vassalage from the Kingdom of León. Its name comes from the host of castles constructed in the region. It was one of the kingdoms that founded the Crown of Castile, and the Kingdom of Spain.

01. Ferdinand I "The Great", King of Leon
and Castile
[1]
was born abt. 1005. He was made Count of Castile in
1028 and recognized as Emperor of Spain in 1056. He married
Sancha of Leon, the sister of
Bermudo III, King of León. Ferdinand defeated Bermudo in battle,
acquiring León through Sancha's right of succession. He began the period of
reconquest of Spain from the Moors. He died on June 24, 1065, dressed
in a monk's habit lying on a bier covered with ashes before the altar of St.
Isidore Church in Leon, having laid aside his crown and royal mantle. |
CASTILE LINE FROM FERDINAND |
05a. Ferdinand II, King of Spain [1] son of Alfonso and Berenguela was born abt. 1137 in Castile, Spain. He married Uracca of Portugal in 1160 in Leon, Spain. Ferdinand was noted both for his intermittent wars with Castile and Portugal and for his reorganization, about 1170, of the military Order of Saint James of the Sword (Santiago de la Espada) to participate in the campaign to drive the Moors from Spain. He reigned for 30 years from 1157 to his death on January 21, 1188 in Leon, Spain.
06. Alfonso
IX, King of Leon and Castile
[1]
son of
Ferdinand and Uracca was born on August 15, 1171 in Leon, Spain. He
married Beringaria in October,
1197 who was the daughter of Alfonso VIII (1155-1214) - see #6 below on
Sancho's line. The marriage between Beringaria and Alfonso was
disolved by order of the pope (Alfonso IX and Alfonso VIII were first
cousins), but their children were proclaimed legitimate. He reigned from
1157 to his death on September 23, 1230 in Castile, Spain. 08. Eleanor, Princess of Castile/Queen of England [1] daughter of Fernando and Joanna was born in 1240 in Burgos, Spain. She married King Edward I on October 18, 1254 in Burgos, Spain. She died on November 28, 1290 in Nottinghamshire, England. I descend from 2 of their daughters: Princess Joan of Acre (1272-1307) who married Gilbert DeClare (1243-1295) and Elizabeth Plantagenet (1282-1316) who married Humphrey VIII De Bohun (c1276-1321). |
CASTILE LINE FROM SANCHO |
05b. Sancho III, King of Castile and Toledo
[1]
son of
Alfonso was born in 1134. He married
Blanche of Navarre on February 4, 1151 in Calaharra, Spain.
He ruled for one year from 1157 to 1158. During the Reconquista, in
which he took an active part, he founded the Order of Calatrava. He was
called el Deseado (the Desired) due to his position as the first child of
his parents, born after eight years of childless marriage. He died on August
31, 1158 in Toledo, Spain. 06. Alfonso VIII, King of Castile [1] son of Sancho was born on November 11, 1155. He married Eleanor of England in 1170. He ruled from 1158 until his death on August 6, 1214. He is most remembered for his part in the Reconquista and the downfall of the Almohad Caliphate. After having suffered a great defeat with his own army at Alarcos against the Almohads, he led the coalition of Christian princes and foreign crusaders who broke the power of the Almohads in the Battle of the Navas de Tolosa in 1212, an event which marked the arrival of a tide of Christian supremacy on the Iberian peninsula. 07a. Beringaria, Queen of Castile [1] daughter of Alfonso VIII and Eleanor was born in 1181 in Segovia, Castile, Spain. She married Alfonso IX, King of Castile in October, 1197. A strong queen, she administered Castile and supplied her son Ferdinand with troops and provisions during his wars. She died on November 8, 1244. I descend from their son Fernando III, King of Castile (1199-1252). 07b. Blanca Alphonsa, Princess of Castile [1] daughter of Alfonso VIII and Eleanor was born in March, 1187 in Valencia, Spain. She married Louis "The Lion" VIII, King of France on May 23, 1200. Blanche was betrothed to Louis because of a treaty between Philip Augustus and King John of England, and was brought to France in the spring of 1200 by John's mother, Eleanor of Aquitaine. The treaty was signed 05/22/1200 and the wedding was celebrated the next day. She proved to be a strong and high-tempered leader, shrewd in her own treaties She died on November 27, 1252 in Seine, France. I descend from their son Robert I "The Valient", Count of Artois (1216-1249). |
