Beaulieu / Hudon |
Origin of the Beaulieu Surname |
"French:
habitational name from any of the extremely numerous places in France named
with Old French beu, bel ‘fair’, ‘lovely’ + lieu ‘place’, ‘location’. The
name is occasionally also found in England; it is then either a Norman name
from one of the French places just mentioned or derives from an English
place name of the same origin, Beaulieu (pronounced byoo-lee) in Hampshire,
seat of the Montagu family." (Source: Ancestry.com from Dictionary of
American Family Names (C) 2013 Oxford University Press) Note: it is
also pronounced "bowl-yer." Originally the Beaulieu's name was Hudon. During the Heugenot Rebellion, a Hudon was a supporter of the king. This Hudon was awarded by the King of France, the title Hudon de Beaulieu. (Source) |
