Origin of the Metcalf Surname

"The Metcalf(e) surname is composed of the Old English mete, meaning 'meat' and 'cealf' a 'calf', the thinking being that this was a calf that was to be fattened up over the summer for eating.  The name originated in the north Yorkshire dales."  (Source)

GENERATION 1

Rev. Leonard Metcalf was born abt. 1541 in Wensleydale, Yorkshire, England and died bef. 1616 in Norfolk, England.  He married Amy (c1558-bef. 1602) abt. 1579.  Leonard was rector of the Tattorford, Norfolkshire parish church from 1573 until prior to his death in 1616.  They had 8 children.

GENERATION 2

Michael "Dornick" Metcalf, Sr., son of Leonard and Amy was born abt. 1591 in Tatterford, Norfolk, England and died on Dec 24, 1664 in Dedham, Suffolk, MA.  He married (1) Sarah Ellwyn (1593-1644) on Oct 13, 1616 in Heigham, England.  He married (2) Mary Sothy (c1600-1673) on Aug 13, 1645 in Dedham, MA.  Michael and Sarah had 11 children.

GENERATION 3

Michael Metcalf, Jr., son of Michael and Sarah was born on Aug 29, 1620 in St. Benedicts, Norwich, England and died on Mar 25, 1654 in Dedham, Suffolk, MA..  He married Mary Fairbanks (1622-1684), daughter of Jonathan Fairbank (1597-1668) and Grace Smith (c1600-1673) on Apr 2, 1644 in Dedham, MA.  They had 5 children.

GENERATION 4

Deacon Jonathan Metcalf, son of Michael and Mary was born on Sep 21, 1650 in Dedham, Suffolk, MA and died on May 23, 1727 in Dedham, Suffulk, MA.  He married Hannah Kenrick (1651-1731), daughter of John Kendrick (c1605-1686) and Anne Smith (c1609-1656) on Apr 10, 1674 in Dedham. They had 10 children:
