William Atte Wode was in Coulsdon Parish in 1278 as a yeoman and landowner. In 1318 they bought the estate known as Beckenham Kent, near Coulsdon. He became Sir William Attwood and was a Captain of the King's Guard. He had two sons, Geoffrey and Peter, who were both Sergeants at Arms to the King. William and his two sons accompanied the King (Edward II) to the French War, in which the French were defeated. Geoffrey lost his life in battle. Immense treasures were taken from the French to England, thereby enriching many of the common soldiers. In this way, Peter Atte Wood obtaining a great deal of wealth, which enabled him, on his return to
England, to buy much acreage.

Joan died June 01, 1654 in Boston, Massachusetts. John was a leather salesman. On the decease of John Attwood, there was litigation between the sons concerning the estate, in which Harmon succeeded in getting the greater part. It is related that the three younger sons were defrauded of their shares on the estate. Three of the sons emigrated to America: John went to Plymouth; Harmon to Boston, and Henry to Middleboro.
