My Marshall Ancestors

Marshall family migration route: South Carolina Ohio Indiana Kansas Oregon

GENERATION 1

01. William John Marshall was born on March 10, 1799 in South Carolina and died on November 10, 1837 in Miami Co., Ohio. He married Charity Wright who was born June 11, 1801 in South Carolina and is most likely the daughter of Nathan Wright and Sarah Jay.  Between 1822 and 1825, the Marshall family migrated to Miami County, Ohio from South Carolina in a wagon covering a distance of 700 miles. They first settled on the Stillwater, but ended up in Darke County.  William purchased land on July 10, 1832 in Miami County.  You can see the deed to his land purchase here . The cause of William's death in 1837 at age 38 is unknown and also as to what happened to Charity after he died.  However, the 1840 census of Miami County shows a Charity Marshall and John Marshall listed together, suggesting that they still lived in Newton Township as late as 1840. The family appeared to have followed the Quaker migration route from South Carolina to Ohio, but no traces of him or his family have been found in Quaker meeting minutes to date. His son Thomas was in possession of a Quaker bible which was used to record the births of his children.  Several of William's children married into Quaker families such as the Furnas' and Pearsons.  William and Charity had 10 children together.  Note:  We can help to establish that Charity's parents are Nathan Wright and Sarah Jay by a letter written in 1841 by Right Wright retained by Ronald E. Toops to sisters Mary Brooks and Charity Marshall.   Click here for a link to the photocopied and transcribed letters posted by Christy L. Jay.  The 10 children of William and Charity are:

GENERATION 2

02. Thomas Marshall, son of William and Charity was born February 25, 1822, possibly in South Carolina. He moved with his family to Miami County, Ohio. He met his wife Rhoda Furnas in Ohio and married in 1843. Rhoda is the daughter of Martin Furnas and Morsena Patty.  County deeds show him being in Miami, Ohio Newton Township in 1850 (Source: Miami Valley Genealogical Index)  Nancy Jane, the couple's youngest child was born in 1863. It is believed that Thomas left Rhoda in 1863 or later because son William Frank in the Civil War had to return home early to help Rhoda out at the farm.  In 1870, Rhoda was in Randolph County, Indiana with her children the year Thomas died. Guardianship papers were filed that year.  The Thomas Marshall family bible was a Quaker one suggesting he may have been a Quaker at some point, although no records of him or his father have been found in Quaker Meeting Minutes. However, his wife Rhoda is known to have Quaker roots since her parent's marriage record does show up in the Quaker Meeting Minutes and it may be through her that the Quaker bible came from. This old picture of Thomas was taken when his son William Frank was about 16, or around the year 1861.  It was framed in the same antique styled frame that his son's was.  The 7 children of Thomas and Rhoda are:

1 Arthur Marshall (Born on Jan 22, 1844 in Miami, OH - Died Jun 19, 1845 in Miami, OH)

GENERATION 3

03. William Frank Marshall, son of Thomas and Rhoda was born on August 14, 1845 in
Miami, Ohio.  Click Here for a picture of William at age 16 while serving in the Civil War.  He was later captured during Sherman's march to the sea and spent time as a prisoner. He later escaped and returned home to help his mother or the farm (It is believed that Thomas left Rhoda at this time, since he was still alive). He then went back into the army and was later discharged. He was a gunsmith and also made violins. Shortly after he returned from the army he started a diary that details his daily activities before he met Nancy.  At the time he was known as a fine fiddle player and often performed at local events.  He married Nancy Emily Crewse about 1879 and settled in Wellington, Kansas. Nancy is the daughter of James Crews and Rhoda McMulin.  About 1900, the family moved to Eugene, Oregon where his youngest 2 children were born. He died in 1909 in Eugene, 5 years after Ada was born. He was 64 years old when he died.
